People’s Health Foundation, in partnership with Yangon Regional Government, Yangon City Development Committee and Yangon Regional Public Health Department, and with technical and financial support of the “Partnership for healthy cities Project for Yangon City” (under Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative and Vital Strategies), has launched the smokefree Yangon City by 2022.
General Objective of the partnership project is to pursue no tobacco smoking at public places, and to protect general population, primarily mothers and children, from second-hand smoking.
- Advocacy Meeting with stakeholders from newly expanded places (17 July, 2019)
With the approval of Yangon Region Government (Letter No 4/8-2 (15) Social, dated 26 June 2019) for expansion to six downtown townships and 4 townships from 4 districts of Yangon City, an advocacy meeting with district and township level stakeholders from these expanded townships was organized at the University of Nursing, Lanmadaw Township, Yangon, on 17 July 2019. Total of (77) participants had joined the meeting. Presentations on (a) brief explanation on Yangon City Smokefree Project, initiated with support from Partnership for Healthy Cities, funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies by President, PHF and Deputy Regional Public Health Director, Yangon Region Department of Public Health; (b) Why smokefree places being established, legal background?, and Dangers of second hand smoke, by Dr Thein Tun, PHF, (c) experience on Kyauktada Township Smoke-free initiative, by U Htoo Kyaw, Chief Administrator, Kyauk-ta-da; (d) Implementation Guide for expansion Townships by Dr Myint San, PHF; and (e) Discussions on how new townships have to proceed (all participants).
- Advocacy and Orientation meetings of Township Implementation Committee and Inspection Teams to launch smoke-free townships in selected townships in Yangon (September, 2019-January 2020)
Township-level advocacy and orientation meetings were held at respective townships, joined by the members of Township Implementation Committees and Inspection Teams, to initiate the launch of smokefree township activities. An average of 60-100 participants joined in each township meeting. After initial introduction on brief explanation on Yangon City Smokefree Project, initiated with support from Partnership for Healthy Cities, funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies, brief talks on why smokefree places being established, legal background?, and dangers of second hand smoke, including Implementation Guide for expansion Townships, were explained. Future plans were discussed and adopted.
