In Myanmar, deployment of trained Midwives for all village-tracts and selected big- and far-flung villages is a major challenge, since annual production of midwives is not able to cope up with the need.  In order to fill the gap, Ministry of Health and Sports (MoHS) has instituted the selection, training and deployment of village girls as volunteers, Auxiliary Midwives (AMW).  PHF has organized the AMW training programs (107 trainees) in six townships of Mon State, with its own funding of Kyat 800 lakhs.  Similarly, with the collaboration of MJCP, the Akane Scholarship Program for AMW Training was organized for training 100 AMWs in 5-year period from 2015-2020, at Kyaung-gon Township of Ayeyawady Region, with an estimated budget of US$ 12,000/- per year. First batch of 20 Akane Fellows and 15 PHF Fellows for AMW training had started in January, 2015. With the request from Chin State Government, 20 village girls from Kan-pet-let Township had been selected and trained at Pakokku District Hospital, from June to November2015, with the cost incurred by PHF with over Kyat 190 lakhs. At the end of 6-months, these AMWs were deployed at their own villages to serve as volunteers for maternal and child care.

Second batch of 20 AMW selected as Akane Fellows had joined the training in May 2016 at Kyaung-gon Township.Third batch of 20 AMW selected as Akane Fellows had joined the training in April 2017 at Kyaung-gon Township.  Under the rural development programs in 2 pilot areas, Nwa-to-gyi Township of Mandalay Region and Phyu Township of Bago Region, a total of 38 newly recruited AMWs were trained and deployed during 2016. Practical training of trainers from all program townships was conducted by the training experts from PHF, utilizing maternal care training aids such as “Mama Natalie”.
Good standing AMW trainees from all program townships (altogether 56 AMWs) were called to Yangon as a study visit to PHF Headquarter, and social visits to National Museum, in October 2015. A similar program for 35 AMWs and their trainers was arranged in October, 2016, 2017 and 2018.
