The main function of a rural health centre is to provide essential health care, including maternal and child health care and public health prevention and promotion works, to the whole population they serve, normally around 25,000 people.   In some Townships, due to geographical barriers, RHC staff are not able to reach a few villages which are still under their jurisdiction.

PHF selected such villages (about 16 villages with 30,000 people) in Yamethin and Kyaukse Townships of Mandalay Region, since these villages were situated in the eastern mountain ranges, and were not accessed only in rainy season for at least 6 months. Usually these villages could be accessed only by walking long distances.

PHF established one mobile health team (consisting similar staff deployed at a RHC) in each township.  PHF supported them with essential medicine kits and motor-cycles so as to make them mobile.  During the pilot six-months of operation in 2015, mobile teams were able to visit the previously un-accessed or under accessed villages (19 villages in Kyaukse and 9 villages in Yamethin) at least 3 times, and provided essential health care to over 7000 people, 90 health education sessions, disease prevention and surveillance of principle communicable diseases, and other environmental sanitation and health promotion activities.
